AZERBAIJAN CYCLING WEEK
Azerbaijan-Europe Cycling Tour

Baku-Gandja, 28 August – 6 September 2010

NATO International School of Azerbaijan (NISA) is pleased to announce a call for applications on Azerbaijan-Europe Cycling Tour between the dates of August 28-September 6, 2010, Baku-Ganja, Azerbaijan!
Bicycle is one of the greatest environmental discoveries ever invented. They do more than clear air. On a bicycle very little space is taken up, no gasoline is burned and no waste is produced. A bicycle can travel 1,600 km (960 miles) on the equivalent energy of a liter of a gas. Between 70 and 100 bicycles can be built with the resources required to build one car.

In the light of all this, it is suggested to organize a Europe-Azerbaijan bicycle tour from Baku to Gandja for one-week duration from the end of August to early September. The Bicycle Tour will certainly have multiple public diplomacy objectives. Given that bicycle is a renewable energy-run and eco-friendly vehicle, the project would promote the environmental and food security and the use of renewable energy sources, advocate healthy life-style, as well as raise public awareness on environmental issues pertinent to the whole European area.

1.      Participation

About 35 local and international bicycle riders will be invited to join the event. Participants are expected to come from all over the Europe. They do not have to be professional bicyclers, however they should be physically fit, bicycle-skilled, prepared to meet challenges and contribute to the topical part of the tour. Some passion and dedication will be needed too.

2.      Host Nation Support

Azerbaijan will provide for visas, board and lodging expenses, cultural program and other necessary logistical support (including traffic security, technical and medical support, etc.) throughout the whole event. Additionally, the participants will be provided with the racing bike during the tour. Travel expenses can be reimbursed up to 70% of the total cost (economy class ticket).  Hosts are looking for sponsorship of the well-known international bicycle producer companies who may consider this tour as a good advertising opportunity for the promotion of healthy life style, environmental friendliness and bicycle riding.

3.      Program and schedule

Participants will arrive on 28th of August, and be met at the Baku airport and accommodated in a hotel for 2 day training and program discussions. Professional bicycler will provide an advice. Bicyclers will depart from Baku on 30th of August upon organizing a press-conference. Distance between Baku and Gandja is 350 km. Participants will cycle between 9.00-12.00 in the morning, then have a lunch. It is expected to cycle 50-60 km a day.

While having stopovers in major towns alongside the route, the rest of the day will be dedicated to meeting public and local authorities, visiting topics-related sites, organizing debates and discussions, informing the interlocutors on the issues concerning environment, energy and food security.

Along with briefings on different regions of Azerbaijan, participants shall enjoy evening after-dinner discussions on European affairs, security related topics, each evening will be reported by a reporter as part of the tour storybook.

The tour will end up in Gandja on 5th of September, second largest city of Azerbaijan, with a press conference and later on sightseeing tours around the city. The team will depart from Gandja by plane and arrive in Baku on 6th of September. The event is expected to last for 10 days altogether.
